New Music Alert: Divebar Youth
Introducing Divebar Youth - the genre-defying project of rising Adelaide musician Vinnie Barbaro. Today Divebar Youth is thrilled to release his new single ‘ORION’, a brilliant concoction of stargazing indie and 00s pop, with a modern hip-hop twist.
Speaking to the track’s theme, Divebar Youth explains: “The song 'ORION' is about how we get in our own way when it comes to feeling. I speak about mental roadblocks and how I’ve tried to find the beauty in every moment. With the idea that we’re “just some kids with no place to go”, the song looks towards the prospect of new love and how that interacts with trying to find one’s way in the world.
The first track with Sydney-based producer Taka Perry (Ruel, Sycco, Denzel Curry) was a new experience and fitting collaboration, although it began with its own set of challenges.
With the closure of state borders affecting the sessions which had been scheduled in Sydney, Barbaro and Perry looked at ways to continue the process remotely.
“Making the track in real time by utilizing online calls helped us to create a song which captures the feeling of being close to someone, yet far away. We finished the song without ever meeting in person, a reflection of “the new normal”.
In his young but bright career this far, Divebar Youth’s knack for pushing the limits of genre have seen his songs feature across triple j’s Lunch, Arvos, Home & Hosed, and even Short.Fast.Loud.
Divebar Youth has also recently been featured on MTV Australia as well as Spotify’s Fresh Finds AU/NZ playlist this year.
“My traditional musical training has taught me to fear mixing genres, but I have found that the modern era of instant access allows us to explore our interests without boundaries. I love artists who put odd inspirations together to create beautiful music, as this mirrors my own process.”
Last year, he was selected as a semi-finalist in the International Song Writing Competition (ISC), took home the title of Best Music Video at the 2020 South Australian Film Awards, and was chosen as a finalist in the CLIPPED Music Video Festival alongside Mia Rodriguez, George Alice, G Flip & Genesis Owusu.
Divebar Youth was also selected as one of four grant recipients through N1 Records this year - the artist development program supported by Adelaide’s Northern Sound System.
